Zverev Faces Auger-Aliassime in ATP Finals Showdown

Introduction

The inherent challenges of group stage tennis mean during this phase of the ATP Finals viewers are commonly scratching our heads, scrambling about for a computing device and striving to determine the complex potential outcomes for advancement. But this evening's contest between Zverev and Felix Auger-Aliassime, thankfully, is straightforward. It's a direct elimination: the winner secures a final four matchup against Carlos Alcaraz at this season-ending event; the loser heads out.

Zverev is the favourite for this: the world No 3 is the player with greater achievements, has previously won at this event twice before and leads their head-to-head with six victories against three defeats, winning both their previous matches on an covered hard surface.

However … this particular court on which Felix has secured most of his championships, he’s riding a high after his compelling comeback against Shelton on Wednesday and he defeated the German in the US Championships third round in August. Additionally, the playing speed is higher in the host city than at Flushing Meadows, which works even more in Auger-Aliassime's favour.

If the German player is reserved, as he did against the Italian, and the Canadian presses the European player with his powerful serves and fearless play, it might very well be the young Canadian – the former prodigy who was previously positioned in front of the Spanish and Italian stars to take over from the tennis icons – who earns the dubious honour of facing the world No 1 on Saturday.

Play begins: at about 8.30pm local time, 7.30pm GMT.
