Why Los Blancos Have 'Complete Trust' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for Real Madrid, including five starts.

Whenever a 18-year-old creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a pivotal European tie against Manchester City, it naturally attracts praise and the spotlight.

In only his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time European champions secured a three-nil round of 16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then assisted the Madrid side overcome the English champions in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a last eight berth.

Aged 18 years old, Pitarch was the club's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, beating star Vini Jr's record by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent Through The Academy

This talent is the most recent to come through from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting protegees.

He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

He progressed to the reserve side and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the senior squad, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who replaced the previous coach in the new year.

Reports would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, personality and drive he brought to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Remains His Character'

During the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the first team and awarded him playing time in pre-season.

Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the defining moment in his career as he came on as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the first day I started playing the game, every day you head to training and each day you play a match," said Pitarch following his debut.

"I've just achieved my dream with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."

Handed a starting debut in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he spent several seasons after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his place for the next four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opportunity.

Pitarch has seized it with displays that have defied his youth and inexperience.

"He is a very quick footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," said the coach. "He is extremely dynamic, with excellent stamina, work-rate and movement."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.

"His greatest quality is his personality," continued he. "He constantly demands the possession, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand people are astonished to see him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had total trust in him to perform what he usually does.

"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the first team. It is delightful to coach a player like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up deeply involved in the local game, progressing through youth setups before entering Real Madrid's famous youth academy.

He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan nationality, offering him the choice to play for either country at the highest level.

Under Fifa eligibility rules, players may appear for different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only binding once they play in a competitive full international.

Pitarch has played for the Spanish national team at youth level, representing both the U19 and under-20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain made it to the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to either full national side, who are watching his progress with interest.

Speaking recently, the player said: "I haven't made my final decision yet. My situation is great with Spain, but I'll make a conclusion soon."

This scenario echoes that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Yamal. Whereas teenage Yamal chose Spain, Brahim decided to play for Morocco.

Focus on the Future

For now, his attention is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He played over an hour in the two-one win at City, which completed a five-one aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in younger players to aid the team chase future success.

After his impressive impact so far on the Champions League, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.

"The manager treats me the identical way. We handle it very normally. I attempt not to think about it too much - I must earn my minutes on the field," he said following the success at Etihad Stadium.
