While Beachgoers Escaped Violence, Viral Picture Depicts Beach Patrol Sprinting ‘All Out’ In the Direction of the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent inhabitant of Bondi, views the iconic beach as her own backyard. On a recent weekend night, she, similar to other neighbors, heard cracking sounds echoing across the neighbourhood.

“That was the initial assumption, but I reasoned it was too light and there was nothing visible,” Ching recounts. Exiting her apartment, she observed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The faces she saw signaled something was wrong.

While standing on the road, talking to a couple who had hurried up the incline in their swimwear, she noticed someone moving up behind her. The person was a lifeguard, sprinting towards Bondi without shoes from the adjacent Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while carrying a life-saving kit.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I just saw this blur of blue,” Ching describes. “He was zooming past. He was alone running in the opposite way that everyone was trying to escape from, carrying that large equipment and unshod … He moved at something that certainly every fibre in your being would instruct you to run in the reverse way.

“Absolutely no pause, but just fully full throttle sprinting.”

A Powerful Moment of Courage Amidst Tragedy

The photograph that Ching snapped of the rescuer, since identified as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as a prime example of acts of courage in the following of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, explained that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to assist the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to work with surf lifesavers, law enforcement and paramedics caring for many victims.

Community Reaction and Solidarity

Doolan’s account was just one of many to come out of the neighbourhood, with the beach facility beside the scene of the incident serving as a temporary treatment center. Accounts show that fellow lifeguards were also seen helping out, such as rushing into the ocean to rescue people needing help.

In the days after the tragedy, messages of appreciation flooded in. A social media message shared appreciation for the responders who exhibited that “compassion will always conquer evil”.

The group of beach patrol issued a message, noting they were “coming to terms with what occurred”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your supportive words and support. We are overwhelmed by the kindness for our personnel,” the team commented. “In time, we will tell our tales in the hope that it aids those involved.”

Local Government Commendation

Waverley council, the governing body that hires many permanent lifeguards, said that the staff acted heroically from the instant the shooting started until late that evening.

“People have shared so many powerful narratives, but the viral picture of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help save lives is remarkable,” commented a council representative.

“The team exhibit selflessness every day in maintaining the safety of our internationally renowned shores safe for the public, but what we witnessed on that day should be commended.

“During this time of sorrow and come to terms with the terror of this brutal and barbaric tragedy, I think it is crucial that we consider just how much good we have seen in the face of such hatred.”
