What We Know Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 people lost their lives and over 40 were wounded when assailants shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities have called a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the death toll remains at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were taken to the hospital.

Those who died have not yet been publicly named, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the victims who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She told the events leading up to the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
