The Porcine Pardon: Pig Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Leader.
It might not have been at the same level as pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. Clemency is justified for her. No offenses are on her docket,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the commencement of a new presidential term.
“Unless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “I hope she experiences a prosperous future free from concern.”
The gathering, either celebrating or rejecting the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was established to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, contributed by a local firefighter, was christened after the modern linguistic fad of young people yelling “six-seven” – originating from a hip-hop line – often for no discernable reason. The craze became so widespread that a prominent word reference recently made “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A New Life
The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to begin the holiday season,” said the cafe owner, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It captures the character of Miami: joyful, diverse, and rooted in traditions that foster togetherness. Each year, we are proud to celebrate tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they celebrated Six Seven’s big moment.
