Armed assailants have killed a teacher and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an raid targeting a female high school in Nigeria's northwestern region, authorities have confirmed.
The gang of attackers invaded the comprehensive secondary school for girls in Kebbi State's Maga area at around 4 AM local time on the start of the week, authorities reported.
The assailants "confronted officers on duty in a shootout" before breaching the school's outer barrier and seizing the students from their hostel, authorities disclosed.
One member of staff was fatally shot while defending the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now undergoing medical care.
Witnesses reported a sizeable number of assailants, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who came shooting randomly to generate terror.
Area inhabitants informed journalists that the gunmen subsequently marched a contingent of young women into adjacent wilderness.
The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "supplementary tactical squads, alongside military personnel and local protection units" to the area.
