The galaxy far, far away enthusiasts have no shortage of titles when it comes to excellent video games wielding lightsabers, but the galaxy imagined by George Lucas is not just a playground for conflict. Few series have understood this as well as Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which was forged in the old-school computer role-playing game tradition that made studios like Obsidian and BioWare famous. Now, after several starts and stops, a major gaming showcase has announced that players will soon be able to dive into a spiritual follow-up to the series. It's called Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic.

The Exciting Unveiling

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is described as "an upcoming single-player narrative-driven action RPG and successor in spirit to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic." Casey Hudson, formerly of BioWare and the director of the original KOTOR, is spearheading the project at Arcanaut Studios.

“When we crafted the original KOTOR, we wanted to create a ultimate Star Wars experience — crafting an adventure that contained all the things we dreamed of doing as Star Wars fans,” Hudson explained. “Now, 25 years after we first conceived that game, our ambitions are equally ambitious. Fate of the Old Republic represents an opportunity to explore a contemporary vision of a ultimate Star Wars experience, using state-of-the-art technology and game design, and an brand-new story crafted specifically to deliver on the fusion of player agency and immersion in Star Wars that was at the heart of KOTOR.”

An Unexpected Turn

The news is something of a surprise, given that 2022 saw a recent try at an Old Republic game get shelved. However, reports had suggested that a remake of KotOR, as well as one of its follow-up, had been under development as recently as March 2025.

Fate is in your hands.

The Legacy of KOTOR

The venerated role-playing games, which have been made available to platforms like the Switch, are renowned for their dialogue-heavy, player-influenced, and character-sheet-deep approach to Star Wars. The games were seminal enough that they unintentionally established how people picture the Old Republic time period as a whole, to this day. The games ventured to question many beliefs of Jedi lore that are often seen as unquestionable, like whether the group and its understanding of the Force are correct. The second game, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, went in a far more grim direction by asking if the world might not be better off without the Jedi at all. Both games are highly regarded by fans years after their release, but the follow-up in particular is considered by some as one of the greatest pieces of Star Wars media in existence.

A New Hope

And now, a few years after receiving a cinematic trailer for a Knights of the Old Republic remake, we're finally getting another game in the same vein. Given the demand for rich games like Baldur's Gate 3 or Divinity: Original Sin, a fresh interpretation on Knights of the Old Republic that's done well has the possibility to be a massive hit.
