In the past, the England assistant coach was playing in League Two. Now, he's dedicated on helping Thomas Tuchel secure World Cup glory in 2026. The road from the pitch to the sidelines started through volunteering with the youth team. Barry reflects, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and he was hooked. He had found his destiny.

Metoric Climb

Barry's progression stands out. Beginning with his first major job, he established a name for innovative drills and great man-management. His stints with teams took him to Chelsea and Bayern Munich, plus he took on coaching jobs abroad with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached big names such as top footballers. Now, with England, it's all-consuming, the peak as he describes it.

“Dreams are the starting point … But I’m a believer that obsession can move mountains. You dream big then you break it down: ‘How do we do it, gradually?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. But dreams won’t get it done. We have to build a systematic approach that allows us to have the best chance.”

Detail-Oriented Approach

Dedication, particularly on fine points, characterizes his journey. Putting in long hours day and night, they both challenge limits. Their strategies include psychological profiling, a heat-proof game model ahead of the tournament in North America, and creating a unified squad. He stresses “Team England” and dislikes phrases such as "break".

“This isn't a vacation or a break,” Barry notes. “We had to build something that the players want to be part of and where they're challenged that it’s a breather.”

Driven Leaders

The assistant coach says and Tuchel as extremely driven. “Our goal is to master all parts of the match,” he states. “We strive to own every metre of the pitch and that’s what we spend most of our time to. It’s our job not just to keep up with developments but to beat them and set new standards. This is continuous focused on finding solutions. And to simplify complexity.

“There are 50 days together with the team ahead of the tournament. We must implement an intricate approach for a tactical edge and we must clarify it in our 50 days with them. It's about moving it from concept to details to knowledge to execution.

“To develop a process that allows us to be productive in the 50 days, we have to use the whole 500 we’ll have had after our appointment. In the time we don’t have the players, we need to foster connections among them. We have to spend time on the phone with them, observing them live, understand them, connect with them. If we limit ourselves to that time, it's impossible.”

Upcoming Matches

The coach is focusing ahead of the concluding matches of World Cup qualifiers – facing Serbia at home and in Albania. The team has secured their place at the finals with six wins out of six with perfect defensive records. But there will be no easing off; instead. This period to reinforce the team’s identity, to gain more impetus.

“The manager and I agree that our playing approach must reflect everything that is good of English football,” Barry explains. “The athleticism, the versatility, the physicality, the honesty. The national team shirt should be harder than ever to get but comfortable to have on. It should feel like a cape not protective gear.

“To ensure it's effortless, we have to give them an approach that enables them to move and run like they do every week, that resonates with them and encourages attacking play. They should overthink less and focus more on action.

“You can gain psychological edges available to trainers in attack and defense – building from the defense, closing down early. Yet, in the central zone of the pitch, those 24 metres, we feel the game has become stuck, particularly in the Premier League. All teams are well-prepared currently. They can organize – defensive shapes. Our aim is to speed up play in that central area.”

Passion for Progress

The coach's thirst for development knows no bounds. While training for the Uefa pro licence, he felt anxious over the speaking requirement, since his group included stars including former players. For self-improvement, he sought out the most challenging environments available to him to practise giving them. One was HMP Walton in his home city of Liverpool, where he coached prisoners for a training session.

He completed the course with top honors, with his thesis – focusing on set-pieces, in which he examined thousands of throw-ins – became a published work. Lampard included impressed and he brought Barry as part of his backroom at Stamford Bridge. When Lampard was sacked, it spoke volumes that Chelsea removed virtually all of his coaches but not Barry.

His replacement at Stamford Bridge was Tuchel, and shortly after, they secured European glory. When Tuchel was dismissed, Barry stayed on with Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced with Bayern, he recruited Barry away from London to work together again. The Football Association see them as a double act similar to Southgate and Holland.
